I like Ubuntu much more than Vista, Wine will run most any windows program in linux and you really just have so much more control of your machine with it, (and it's free, which is a plus) There are plenty of programs for linux, one for every major program that comes installed with windows, so you don't have to worry about not having office or outlook as there are linux versions. Why not just dual boot if you are really not sure, then choose which you want when you are using both. Or, if you're problem is that you have not used ubuntu before, get a live boot disk (which can be downloaded for free and burned) to see if you like it or not. Free wins over payed every time for me.

Re: Windows V vs Linux Ubuntu Beryl

You can't go wrong with Ubuntu or any Linux distribution. Sure, it has a learning curve but the experience and knowledge gained in working with any UNIX/Linux system is valuable, especially if you plan on working as an IT professional or studying computers at school. And as Jen pointed out, Linux (or Ubuntu in this case) has a plethora of benefits, mainly one of them being a free OS, so you really have nothing to lose (except harddrive space lol).

Honestly, I have a mixed opinion on Windows Vista. For instance, I admit I do like its new interface much more than Windows XP. Secondly, my sister (who is not as computer savvy as I am, no offense to her) actually has had no problems using Windows Vista compared to my other friends, who've done nothing but complain about the issues with the OS. It's really strange, you'd think a person like my sister would be the first one to say, "Hey bro, I have a problem..." but so far, I haven't had her ask me for anything. Lol...

If anything, I'd ditch Windows Vista just to be on the safe side, go with Ubuntu if you're curious, and wait for Windows 7 which is supposed to be the successor (emphasis on "success") to Windows Vista. Stick out tongue

Or just wait for XP SP3, which should be nice if you want to stay with windows (stay away from vista at all costs)

I see nothing wrong with Vista. That's just me. But XP is the best though.

Re: Windows V vs Linux Ubuntu Beryl

Everyone here keeps saying Linux Linux Linux, and I totally dig and understand that, but there's one drawback to Linux if you're going to be making a gaming machine, and that's using a virtual machine.

Virtual machines have to steal ram, processor space, and you have the added stress of basically running two operating systems on top of one another.  Sure, you can get the benefits of both worlds, but there is a cost.

If you're like me, you can't afford to lose memory to any process.  I have alot of extra memory, sure, but I like making sure that whatever game I'm running, I'm running it in awesomely pretty mode and not getting any framerate issues.  I run Windows Vista because I like taking advantage of DirectX 10.  It makes things very pretty and I really enjoy it.

So, if you're not going to do hardcore gaming, go with the Linux/Ubuntu.  If you're going to be doing some gaming, stick to Windows XP.  If you're going to be nuts like me and want to take advantage of DirectX 10, then you're going with Windows Vista whether you like it or not.

Exactly if you're going to play smart like myself. Get a beast computer and get vista. Directx 10 effects look awesome.

Jen and I have mentioned some benefits to using Linux on our posts above. But you can also try checking these sites for more information:

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/security/security_report_windows_vs_linux/
    http://www.michaelhorowitz.com/Linux.vs.Windows.html
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Windows_and_Linux
    http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/94059/index.html

Personally, I like both Windows and Linux, and I would be a hypocrite if I were to say that I'm anti-Windows and pro-Linux. I've played around with both OS's and I can definitely see that each have their uses, their disadvantages and advantages, their strengths and weaknesses. In the end, it really depends on what you do, and whether you'd rather pay for a legal copy of Windows or download a free (but also legal) copy of Linux.
